Achieving climate neutrality requires a cross-sectoral energy transition toward a low-emission, resource-efficient energy system. A key contribution to this transition lies in the electrification and coupling of the heating and transport sectors, particularly at the level of low-voltage distribution grids. Under Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG), controllable consumption devices and time-varying grid tariffs provide the legal and economic framework for managing electricity consumption. The integration of battery storage systems and other sources of flexibility can help reduce grid congestion and ensure system stability. The objective of the ProFlexGrid project is to develop a cross-sectoral simulation environment for energy system analysis and for the systematic investigation of new grid control methods.
Two central approaches are pursued. The first approach aims to prevent potential grid constraints through the early use of flexibility and dynamic price incentives. Methodologically, this is achieved through rolling-horizon robust optimization, which represents uncertainty by means of probability distributions and confidence intervals derived from them.
The second approach focuses on managing grid constraints that have already occurred by means of control interventions in accordance with Section 14a EnWG. These interventions are based on deterministic and probabilistic power flow analyses, which enable reliable assessment of the grid state and the derivation of suitable control measures. The combination of these two approaches across different time scales represents a key innovation of the project.
