The research project “Kunstunterricht – gestern – heute – und morgen auch!” (“Art Education—Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, Too!”) investigates how experiences of school art education shape prospective art teachers’ conceptions of teaching and learning. It focuses on positive and negative memories of art classes at secondary school, formative classroom situations, and experiences of how art and artistic practice were taught.
At the beginning of each academic year, students commencing their studies in art education are invited to participate in an online survey. This produces different cohorts whose responses can be examined both separately and across academic years. The data are analysed using qualitative content analysis. The study aims to identify recurring patterns of experience and interpretation, as well as potential differences between cohorts, and to explore their significance for art educational beliefs and future teaching practices. The findings are also intended to provide insights into how reflection on one’s own educational biography can be incorporated into university-level art teacher education and the professional development of prospective teachers.
