Germany and Europe face critical challenges. In a difficult and competitive environment, the economy must, to a large extent, reinvent itself in order to ensure prosperity and security for future generations; at the same time, the consequences of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent and require decisive action to limit global warming. Unfortunately, these two aspects are often portrayed as contradictory in public discourse. Our interdisciplinary consortium presents three projects that can help improve society’s competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability. Drawing on our consortium’s proven expertise, we propose projects that (i) can increase the efficiency of ground-mounted PV systems from 25% to over 40%, (ii) enable the integration of PV into windows and agricultural land, and finally (iii) facilitate the light-driven conversion of atmospheric carbon dioxide into valuable chemical feedstocks.
