Short description

The tasks of the partners can be subdivided in the sense that the main focus of the Institute of Electric
Power Systems are in the area of power grid modeling and IEES has the necessary laboratory structures to
set up the digital twin and to perform the real time simulations. The Institute of Economics, in particular
Economic Theory, is concerned with the topic of the economic and regulatory framework to fully exploit the
technical potential of the energy community. The main focus of HEITEC Innovations GmbH lies in the area
of thermal modeling and automation. ESTW AG is involved in the project especially in the development of
measurement concepts, the design of simulation scenarios, the evaluation of results and in questions of
acceptance and participation of the residents. OPAL-RT, as a manufacturer of real-time simulators, has the
expertise necessary for the project in setting up the sector-coupled digital twin and provides support in the
simulations. Due to the interdisciplinary project approach, a close cooperation between the partners in all
work packages is necessary. Overall, the project is divided into the following work packages, with the FAU
being involved in all work packages:
WP 1: Measurement and monitoring
WP 2: Development of the digital twin for the residential quarter
WP 3: Development and analysis of regulatory framework and tariff models
WP 4: Integration of the microgrid controller into the digital twin
WP 5: Scenario simulation
WP 6: Field test
WP 7: Transferability to existing settlements
WP 8: Summary and evaluation
WP9: Participation and acceptance

Scientific Abstract

The project follows the approach of an optimized energy use of electricity, heating and cooling in an energyplus
settlement. This is to be carried out through the coordinated operation of the three sectors, taking into
account generation, consumption and the available storage facilities. The available grid capacities in the
residential area will be taken into account and used as optimally as possible. Possible optimization goals
include increasing the feed-in of existing PV systems, or optimal heat and electricity storage management.
Different regulatory approaches are considered in order to fully exploit the technical potential of the energy
community.
For the investigations, a cross-sectoral real-time simulation model of the settlement is created. By coupling
the real-time model with measurements, a Digital Twin is created. The Digital Twin provides the necessary
degrees of freedom for planning and extensive simulations of different scenarios. This makes it possible to
individually adapt optimization algorithms to the requirements of the individual scenario in advance of the
real test operation in the field. In addition, mathematical optimization models will be developed to
investigate the effects of different regulatory frameworks as well as different tariff models on investment and
operation decisions. An investigation of the transferability of the results to existing settlements is important,
since the energy transition in the building sector can only succeed if innovative concepts are transferred to
existing infrastructure. An examination of the transferability of optimization strategies obtained to an existing
settlement is therefore a crucial component in the project.
The focus of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is on electrical modeling,
optimization and regulation.
