Project details

Short description

The technical solutions developed within ENSURE are validated technically on the one hand on the co-demonstration platform and evaluated from a system and sustainability perspective on the other. Finally, recommendations for action tailored to the respective target groups are derived.

FAU is involved in the following modules:

In addition, FAU contributes to the development of the co-demonstration platform in the following work packages:

As part of an additional funding increase, the scope of work was expanded to include a Replica-Ready Study as well as consolidation activities relating to the Co-demonstration platform.

Scientific Abstract

The ENSURE research project, part of the Kopernikus Projects for the Energy Transition funding initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, investigates suitable energy grid structures for the current transformation process. Energy grid structures must compensate for both the spatial and temporal differences between electricity generation and consumption, which are becoming increasingly pronounced as the use of renewable energy sources intensifies. The ENSURE project pursues four overarching objectives:

a. Developing clear recommendations for the holistic design of a future grid incorporating centralised and decentralised supply components;

b. Developing an “Energy Transition Toolbox” comprising technical solutions in the form of individual modules that represent key components for implementing the energy transition in Germany;

c. Expanding and completing a co-demonstration platform on which the individual technical modules can be validated and their systemic interaction demonstrated under realistic conditions;

d. Engaging in dialogue and transferring the project results to ENSURE's key target groups. These include grid operators, regulatory authorities and policymakers, as well as society.

ENSURE 3 thus seamlessly continues the objectives and work carried out in Phases 1 and 2.

The main areas of focus at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) are the development of the co-demonstration platform and investigations in the fields of grid protection and supersynchronous interactions in converter-dominated grids.
