Third Party Funds Group - Sub project
Acronym: VeN2uS
Start date : 01.09.2021
End date : 31.08.2024
Extension date: 28.02.2025
The three-year project is structured in eight work packages. These cover all aspects necessary for the
conceptual design and verification of the adaptive and grid protection system. Special focus is put on the
verification of the adaptive and interconnected grid protection system in laboratory and field tests.
In WP1, use cases are specified and the requirements for the adaptive protection system are defined.
In WP2, the conceptual design and implementation of a simulation environment for the simulative
verification of the adaptive grid protection algorithm is carried out.
In WP3, the conceptual design of the adaptive and interconnected grid protection system is carried out in
parallel.
In WP4, new concepts for protection testing of the adaptive and interconnected grid protection system are
developed.
In WP5, reliable and secure communication concepts will be developed.
In WP6, the data interfaces between the adaptive and interconnected grid protection system and the grid
control system are conceptualized and implemented.
In WP7, the adaptive and interconnected grid protection system will be demonstrated in laboratory and field
tests. For this purpose, the developed protection device demonstrator will be integrated into laboratory and
field environments, thus verifying the entire process chain of the adaptive and interconnected grid
protection system.
In WP8, the added value of the adaptive and interconnected grid protection system compared to existing
conventional protection will be quantified and recommendations for action derived.
The FAU participates in particular in the development of an adaptive energy grid protection scheme in WP3
and the develpment of new concepts for protection testing in WP4. The focus of the FAU is the guarantee
and improvement of secure grid operation. The advancement of grid protection systems requires a
transformation of protection testing to accommodate the new specifications.
The integration of distributed energy resources (DER) creates new feed-in points at distribution grid level,
which can cause power flows into the higher-level grid level. As a result, grid topology changes are already
necessary several times a day. If, in the course of this, conditions that cannot be controlled by the existing
protection concept are detected, immediate action must be taken and the DER must be shut down.
The goal of the VeN²uS research project is the development and implementation of an adaptive and
interconnected grid protection system that adapts the protection parameters in the event of power flow
shifts and topology changes and ensures secure operation. For this purpose, an adaptive grid protection
algorithm is first developed and verified. In parallel, resilient and reliable communication and protection test
concepts are developed. Subsequently, the development paths are merged and the adaptive and
interconnected grid protection system is verified by demonstration in the laboratory and (for the first time in
Germany) also in field tests. This ensures that real challenges of commissioning and grid operation are also
addressed.
The results from simulation and field tests will then be used to quantify the added value of the developed
grid protection system compared to existing conventional grid protection. Finally, the entirety of the
knowledge gained in the research project will be transferred to recommendations for action.
The goal of the FAU ist the development and implementation oft he first adaptive energy grid protection
scheme in Germany. This represents an integration of a new technology into the grid protection system.
The focus is the accumulation of expertise and advancement of secondary technology by parameter
switching in operation.
