Third Party Funds Group - Sub project
Acronym: ENSURE2
Start date : 01.02.2020
End date : 31.01.2023
Extension date: 31.12.2023

As part of its original subproject, FAU plans to develop and maintain dynamic reference grids in WP 2.1. In WP 2.3, the reference grids will be made available for joint simulations involving various project partners using co-simulation methods. In addition, FAU will contribute to the development of a real-time-based testing and evaluation environment in WP 2.3. In WP 2.4, FAU will focus on developing a toolchain for the automated determination of protection behaviour optimally adapted to the current system state.
Contents of the 1st Funding Increase:
Development of a multi-terminal MVDC/HVDC test system with grid-forming control strategies on RTDS.
Contents of the 2nd Funding Increase:
Extensions to the MVDC/HVDC test system as well as activities in the areas of protection and the ENSURE storylines.
Contents of the 3rd Funding Increase:
Extensions and activities in the area of the co-demonstration platform and laboratories with regard to the planned demonstrations in ENSURE 3.
Topic 1: HiL and PHIL Applications for the Co-Simulation Platform
Topic 2: Grid Modelling and Interfaces for the Co-Simulation Platform
The Kopernikus project ENSURE takes a holistic approach to researching new energy grid structures for the energy transition. The focus is on clarifying how centralised and decentralised energy supply components need to be configured within the overall system. A grid-related demonstration is used to implement the feasibility of selected research findings, i.e. to put the developed systemic concepts into practice and test new technologies.
The focus of FAU's subproject is on the development of dynamic grid models and evaluation environments for advanced stability studies. In addition to the use of innovative tools such as co-simulation and real-time simulation, dynamic grid reduction is another key area of focus. In particular, the dynamic behaviour of future grids, with the integration of a high proportion of renewable generation connected via power electronics, must be addressed in grid reduction using new scientific methods. Another sub-area covers the integration and adaptive design of protection systems, extending to the development of an assistance system.
