Cluster 1 develops scenarios for a future energy system, taking into account the corresponding economic framework conditions and societal expectations. These scenarios provide the framework for the work carried out in the other clusters. The primary objective of Cluster 2 is the development, conceptualisation and design of new system structures. Based on these system structures, Cluster 3 develops efficient system operation concepts with a focus on flexibility and security of supply. New technologies are developed in Cluster 4 to implement these operating concepts and grid structures. The research results derived in Clusters 1 to 4 are comprehensively tested for their practical applicability in Cluster 5 using a grid demonstrator.
As part of an additional funding increase, work was carried out on the verification of the ENTSO-E transmission grid dataset and the data management of the DSPD toolchain as preparatory work for Project Phase 2.
The Kopernikus project ENSURE takes a holistic approach to researching and providing new energy grid structures for the energy transition. To this end, a comprehensive energy system optimisation is carried out, taking all relevant energy sources into account. The primary objective is to clarify how centralised and decentralised energy supply components need to be configured within the overall system. The second main objective is to implement the developed systemic concepts in practice and test new technologies in a large-scale demonstration project.
As a contribution from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), hybrid and multivariate power grids are investigated. The aim is to assess and improve the interoperability and system stability of multivariate and hybrid AC/DC systems and their components (e.g. HVDC, STATCOM).
Furthermore, investigations are carried out to address multivariate grid conditions and equipment from a protection engineering perspective. This is done with the aim of ensuring a high level of safety and reliability of the protection systems.
