Objective
Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) aims to shape research together with citizens, thereby increasing its relevance. Trusting relationships between researchers and citizens are central to this process. The ELSI Café dialogue format (ELSI: ethical, legal and social implications) enables low-threshold, regular exchange on research and innovation in healthcare. The aim of this study is to systematically explore the framework conditions, participants’ evaluations, and the motivations of those involved in order to derive implications for the design of comparable dialogue formats.
Methods
After the implementation of eight dialogue sessions, a focus group with citizens (n = 6) and a questionnaire survey among researchers (n = 5) were conducted. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis according to Mayring.
Results
Conditions perceived by participants as supportive included a respectful discussion culture, plain language, structured moderation, and sufficient time and space for dialogue. Citizens value exchange, knowledge gain, and contributing to research; researchers benefit from new perspectives on their work and practice presenting their work in an accessible way.
Conclusion
The dialogue format promotes open, informal exchange between citizens and researchers, complements project-based PPI initiatives, and strengthens the development and maintenance of relationships. It thereby contributes to more transparent research.
