Abstract
Background Cancer is a disease that impacts the whole family; it changes family life and in doing so, distresses children and teenagers of parents suffering from cancer. With this in mind, a short survey was carried out in the Aachen area to assess the need for information and further education on dealing with dyeing and death among child care workers, teachers, paediatricians and other trained professionals. Method A short questionnaire was developed on the basis of semi-structured interviews with selected key individuals working in kindergartens, schools and further education. Results The burden of the sampled individuals in dealing with death and sorrow among children and adolescents averaged a mean value of 5.7 (min = 1, max = 10). More than half of those questioned stated that, in terms of dealing with death and sorrow among children and adolescents they were less than (52.9 %) or not at all (18 %) well informed. The question of whether or not there is a need for further education was answered as completely applicable by 30 %, and as more or less applicable by 50 % of those sampled. The most common expectations toward further education were: practical relevance (lending a helping hand for concrete situations), information (for example developing the concept of death among children) and supporting contacts. The feeling of not being adequately informed about the topic was proportional to the higher burden felt in dealing with sorrow and death among children and adolescents (p = 0.01). Moreover, those sampled with less years of experience (and younger) felt a higher degree of burden (p = 0.01) with respect to the topic. Conclusions The results show an information need regards dealing with death and sorrow among the study population. Beyond that palliative care staff should extend their know-how to other professionals in contact with children and adolescents, e. g. teachers, social workers, etc.
