Abstract
Background The Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care facilitates the establishment and development of hospice and palliative care networks in Bavaria. The study aims to systematically describe and analyse the inpatient-outpatient constellations of partners of the networks.
Methodology Within a multiphase procedure, a status analysis using semi-structured interviews (March – June 2015) and a diagnostic workshop for a discussion of interview results (November 2015) were conducted. Data collected within the status analysis were evaluated related to Grounded Theory. Number of network partners and degree of formalisation of the relation were assessed in an online survey (April – June 2016) and evaluated quantitatively. Coordinators and chairpersons of Bavarian hospice and palliative care networks constitute the study population.
Results Study participants (n = 16; female = 12; male = 4; average age: 53.8 years) detail in status analysis and diagnostic workshop partners from in- and outpatient service areas. Networking representatives describe aims of hospice and palliative care networks, partners, recruitment of and cooperation agreements. The quantitative survey reveals that key partners from 36 in- and outpatient service areas are represented in twelve networks. Hospice societies, palliative care units, general and specialist physicians, hospitals in general, specialised community palliative care teams and inpatient nursing homes are among the partners that were most frequently reported as network partners. Moreover, in the online survey, network representatives rated 92.6 % of the most frequently listed further network partners as rather or very important for the network.
Conclusion Results of the surveys form a central component of a recommendation “Hospice and palliative care networks in Bavaria”.
