From an economic perspective, sovereignty can be understood as supreme authority in decision-making about the engagement in business ventures and the organisation of value creation processes. This chapter identifies diversity in design and the possibility to attribute meaning to formal structure as key issues in this context, whose absence compromises sovereignty in business at a fundamental level, independently from its alignment with geopolitical structures. Drawing on extant literature on digitisation and digitalisation, the chapter differentiates between two layers of investigation, concerning the support of business operations by means of electronic data processing and the expansion of design options for value creation processes. Current challenges regarding sovereignty are found to result from the expansion of design options, which creates enormous potential for improvements of value creation procedures and their governance, but puts constraints on the treatment of ambiguity, conflict and paradox in business.
