Abstract

In this experimental work, an optically accessible vessel is used to acquire high-speed extinction images of an Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray-M (eight-hole symmetric design injector) at various injector rotations. Computed tomography is then applied to generate time-resolved three-dimensional liquid volume fraction distributions for analysis of plume and inter-plume behavior. Pure methanol at 20 MPa and 90C (363 K) was injected into inert nitrogen at two different ambient conditions: G1 standard operation (573 K, 600 kPa), and G2 flash-boiling operation (333 K, 50 kPa) [1]. Methanol results are compared to a multi-component gasoline surrogate (PACE-20). Methanol produces longer and more persistent liquid penetration, especially for injection during compression (G1 conditions), but the plume dynamics show behaviours that depend upon operating conditions: whereas the spray plumes of PACE-20 sweep towards the centre of the spray earlier than methanol at G1 conditions, at flash-boiling G2 conditions it is the methanol spray that is the first to collapse to the centreline. Spray M exhibits plumes collapse at conditions spray G does not.
